Thinking ahead is always a good move for appropriate forms of defensive driving. It is impossible to know what the other people on the road are doing, what they are thinking, or what they will be doing — but you can anticipate those things as long as you are vigilant.
It is important to keep your eyes peeled for any wrong moves; you have got to be ready to react to any mistakes.
Paying close attention to red or yellow lights, stop signs, yield signs, and so on, can be extremely helpful as well. Even when you have got the right of way, plan on stopping, or at least pausing, at all stop signs — just in case another driver decides to disobey the rules of the road.
